EPA Approves New Three-Gene Insect Trait from Dow AgroSciences

Dow AgroSciences has received registration for its new in-plant, three-gene insect protection trait for cotton from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The technology – the next generation of Dow AgroSciences’ WideStrike Insect Protection – will be offered exclusively in PhytoGen brand cotton varieties in 2014, pending regulatory import approvals. Dow officials plan to announce the technology brand name this summer.

Dow AgroSciences now becomes the first company to offer a three-gene trait for worm control and for enhanced resistance management in cotton. The new technology contains two Cry proteins and a vegetative insecticidal protein (Vip3A) from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). These traits combine to provide enhanced, in-plant protection against a wide spectrum of key lepidopteran cotton insects, including cotton bollworm, budworm, armyworm, loopers and others.

Dow AgroSciences is also awaiting regulatory approval for the commercial launch of the Enlist Weed Control System in cotton. Combining state-of-the-art weed protection with the next generation of herbicide-tolerant technology is part of the company’s commitment to increasing crop productivity through higher yields, better varieties and more targeted pest management control.

PhytoGen, an affiliate of Dow AgroSciences, offers cottonseed varieties with the most currently advanced in-plant protection options, such as two-gene WideStrike Insect Protection, and Genuity Roundup Ready Flex.
